It is said that knowledge grows by sharing. Imagine if all the major discoveries and innovations have been kept to the innovator themselves. We all be living in the stone age or at least in similar situations. When we do not share knowledge, slowly with time it diminishes and dies.

On the positive side when we share our knowledge with others, it reaches more and more people. Through the sharing process, reaches more innovative minds and enables them to grow further.

Also, with the blog when we share the knowledge we involve ourselves in various studies, conversations, new inventions to improve the legacy systems, etc. This not helps us grow on a personal level but everyone who is involved in the process.

By sharing knowledge or solving the problems of others we may create good goodwill with our readers.
Over time we can establish a good relationship with the audience and create a strong reader base which will be very much useful to promote your brand, sell products, services, and voice your opinion.

Content is king
Blogging and social media, both platforms that will let you share content with the audience. However, they have different purposes and benefits of their own.

A notable benefit of blogging is that the content you post on the blog will stay there forever and is easy to access. Visitors can access it with the help of a URL, link it, or share it.

Social media can be thought of as a medium to share this content. It might let you reach the largest audience, but it is not easy to find the desired content through the vast list of posts coming on social networking platforms.

Besides networking, blogging lets you build a stronger community and other benefits we discussed earlier. Social media can be used to connect the services you provide on your blog. 10 Incredible Link Building Strategies to Improve Your Blog Rank

Link Building Strategies to improve blog rank

In the current time, link building exercise is the most significant strategy in improving your blog rank.  This blog post helps you to identify 10 incredible link building strategies to improve your blog rank.

Link building exercise is the most important strategy of overall SEO efforts. All webmasters who are aware of the importance of link building strategy, are always in search of the sources to create the links for their blog.

We will discuss these link building exercises in detail. But before that let's understand what is link building.

What is link building?

The link building process deals with creating quality links on other websites pointing links back to your blog or website.

When we say quality links, it means that these links have to come from good quality websites. Google assigns more weight to the links, which are coming from trusted sites. So, whenever a renowned website creates a link for your blog, it helps to increase the rank of your website in the search results.

Search engine-ranking mechanism

Earlier in the late 1990s, when there were a handful of search engines available; external links didn't matter a lot. Search engines available back then would use keywords based mechanism to rank sites. Thereafter, people started spamming keywords, use of directories which weren't the right options to promote sites/blogs. This gave rise to promote cheap content with the help of keywords spamming.

Google then introduced backlinks based ranking algorithm. Because of which only sites with authenticated content would rank. Ever since then, Google and other search engines have been using this mechanism to rank sites. Further, the new updates in these algorithms have ensured that only quality content gets promoted.

A backlink has emerged as one of the instrumental parameters to get your website a high ranking in search engines. Below are the working followed link building strategies:

  1. Competitors link analysis
  2. Guest blogging// guest post writing
  3. Broken link building
  4. Submitting your site to directories
  5. Posting on forums
  6. Adding a link in the comment
  7. Posting links to the question-answer site
  8. Adding links in press release articles
  9. Submitting the link to RSS directories
  10. Adding your links in local citation
Let's have a look at these strategies one by one and build links for our sites.

Strategy #1: Competitor's link analysis

Competitor's link analysis

Let's assume that we have done all prework work that needs to be done on the website. i.e. added quality content, keywords, and optimization of all pages for search engines. Now, our next goal is to get backlinks from the right sources.

To identify the quality link sources for backlinks, you need to study the websites which are already successful in your niche. Competitor's link analysis lets you understand how they are connected to other sites on the internet and what methodology and platforms they are using for link building.

To identify your competitors, make Google search by using primary keywords of your blog and list 10 websites that appear in the search result. Check if these sites fall into your blog niche and complete the list of 10 websites in an Excel file.

There are a couple of free tools (OpenLinkProfilerSEMRUSHOpen Site Explorer) with limited functionality which I assume are sufficient enough to perform competitor's link analysis at a small level. However, if you wish to use premium services that give full details without any limitations I'll recommend using SEMRUSH for the simplicity if offers to use the service.

By using link tracking tools mentioned above track the competitor's website for backlinks sourceshigh authority domain links, testimonials links, directory links,  guest post links, and dead links. Also, you will have to keep a tab on it by making this check-in every week or a month to track new backlinks acquired by your competitor.

An excel file with backlink data should also have details like domain authority rankanchor texttop-ranking web pages from these domains which will help you plan a strategy for your backlinking exercise.

Finally, our aim of tracking the competitor site is to get high authority backlinks for our site. Therefore, approach site owners for any link opportunity you find through this tracking process, submit your site to directories, or fix broken links by offering your site link as a replacement.

Strategy #2: Guest blogging/Guest post writing

Guest Blogging Guest post writing

Guest blogging or guest post writing is nothing but writing a blog post on someone else's site and in return, you get a backlink to your site. Guest blogging could be a highly effective strategy for link building and getting traffic to your site. Despite that many of the bloggers doubt it's effectiveness and write content for the sole objective of getting a backlink.

Keep below-mentioned tips in mind when writing a guest post:

  • Write a quality post that provides valued information and experience to the user than writing a low-quality post. A qualitative post will influence readers to visit back to your site for more such work.
  • To get approval for a guest post from an established blogger, you should engage yourself with the author. Commenting on his blog posts, sharing his content frequently to grab his attention are some ways to grab the author's attention.
  • A guest post should be just like any normal post you write on your site. You may include high-authority links from external sources and maybe just 2-3 links of your own site rather than spamming it with too many links.
  • If you are aiming to borrow traffic from the website for which you will be writing, then choose a website that writes a post every 2-3 days or every week. Highly popular sites that publish 2-3 posts or even more posts daily would make your guest post lost in the flow.

Strategy #3: Broken link building

Broken link building

Broken link building lets you create a backlink on another site by reporting a broken link to the site owner and offering him your link as a replacement for the broken link. Broken links cause harm to SEO efforts as well as user experience. Hence site owner may agree to your proposal if your post has relevant content.

We have already seen how to look for a competitor's link profile in the first strategy. In the same way, we can use backlinks finder tools to locate site URLs of these niche sites which gives a 404-page error (broken link error). Later, you can approach these site owners to replace the link with your own page link.

Strategy #4: Submitting your site to directories

Submitting your site to directories

Web directories are nothing but the sites that list various sites in their database under several categories. Getting backlinks from these directories is one of the effective ways to build your linking profile.

What are the benefits of submitting the site to web directories?

  • Spam-free web directories could provide you quality backlinks which will help you rank better in SERP.
  • Web directories not only help us in building backlinks but also in getting massive exposure to your site. Increased traffic could help you increase your revenue or sell your products faster.

In a notepad or excel whatever you prefer and write down the following things:

  • Your site URL
  • Site title
  • Description text
  • Important keywords
  • Valid email to register
  • RSS feed URL
  • Social media links
  • Site category
Now visit authoritative web directory sites and fill in these details to include your site in these directories. I made several searches to find free web directories that actually work in 2017. Many of them list either paid sites or have outdated site listing. I find this article useful from the rest of the sites that list High PR Directories.

Strategy #5: Posting on forums

Posting on forums

Forums are user communities where users who seek the same interests, gather and share information, and solve one another's queries. Forums could help you get quality backlinks by providing a solution to those who are seeking the information. Add your site link in the feedback form while you share content on the forum with other users.

A simple way to get traffic and the backlinks from a forum is to search for the problem statement by using specific keywords. Before this, create your profile with basic details and your site link. Once it is done, click on the relevant thread that relates to your site page and provides a solution to the problem mentioned in a thread. Finally, mention your site link in the description.

Best SEO practices:

  • Be relevant to the topic of the thread and don't go off the track. Don't spam every thread with the same content but be creative in your communication.
  • Engage in conversation with other members and build a friendly relationship with them.
  • Also while you help other members create a value-add through your solutions.

Strategy #6: Adding links through comments

Adding links through comments

Adding comments on others blog help you get quality backlinks to your blog. This is one of the easiest methods to get quality backlinks to your site, but there are certain checks you must do before you start commenting on other's blog aggressively.

Best SEO practices:

  • Generic comments like, "Nice post!" create no value and hence not much beneficial. Rather will get ignored more likely.
  • Create a profile on a couple of blogging and social media platforms. Add an image to your profile to prove that you are an authentic user.
  • Write descriptive comments that add value and relevance to the post content.
  • If you use your business name or important keywords as a user name which could be more beneficial as it gets hyperlinked and hence better from the SEO perspective, but the site owner may not like your comment thinking it as spam comment. Though, if your comment is really contributing to the thread then your comment might get posted.
Benefits of commenting:

  • Commenting on other's blogs increases the chances of getting your blog indexed by Google more quickly.
  • Do-follow or no-follow comments, it still helps you get backlinks from high authority websites.
  • A well written descriptive comment helps to influence the visitors of the site and may also create curiosity in his mind to follow your blog.
  • Commenting provides a chance to connect with established bloggers and help you get recognition in the community.

Strategy #7: Posting links to the question-answer site

Posting on question answer sites

Question-answer sites are the common platform to get any question answered by the users. These sites have high page ranking and it is a good platform to get backlinks to your site.

Start looking for the questions on these sites which are related to your blog posts. Once you locate these questions you may answer them in writing a short descriptive solution and a link to your site.

This post I came across lists the top 15 question answer sites of the year 2017.

      Best SEO practices:

      • While you answer the queries posted on question-answer sites create value-add through your answers.
      • Don't spam threads by adding just a link to your post but post descriptive solution also.
      • Engage in communication with the users on the sites.

      Strategy #8: Press release articles

      Press Release articles

Companies use press release articles to make important announcements or product launches to syndicate news media. Later these media houses may cover stories on such press releases.

Though a trend became common for companies making press releases every in a while, these press releases help them get backlinks from the webmasters in good numbers. No sooner Google started to penalize these companies and even those sites that shared these links.

However, nowadays no-follow links still can help you get a good number of backlinks without upsetting Google.

      Best SEO practices:
      • To use press release articles, your article needs to have something potentially good to be shared.
      • Press release articles should have important keywords only. A spammed article may get penalized by Google.
      • Add no-follow backlinks in your article to ensure that it doesn't get penalized.
      • Choose the right words for your anchor text for its effectiveness.
      • Include only 2-3 links to your site in your article or it gets penalized.

Strategy #9: Submitting a link to RSS directories

      Submitting links to RSS directories

Nowadays every leading blogging platforms provide you RSS service and some directories list your articles based on your RSS feed. Some of these directories provide high-quality do-follow backlinks which help in improving your Google ranking.

This article lists the top 20 RSS directories where you can submit your blog feed. Some of the blogs in my niche which are highly popular use these directories to improve their link profile. So these are worth noting.

Strategy #10: Adding citation on local platforms

      Adding citation on local platforms

A citation is nothing but online references to your business name, business address, and business phone number. A citation can be included on your website, local business directories, and apps. But, as we are looking at this from SEO and link building perspective, hence we will consider external options.

It is far easy to rank high in local business directories than the global platform. A citation is one of the factors Google takes into consideration for ranking your site in local search results. Having citations on several business directories ensures the trustworthiness of your site and ranking in Google SERP.

      Best SEO practices:
      • Include the citation for your blog in local directories, social media platforms,  as well as industry-specific directories.
      • The local, geo, or industry-specific directories vary from business to business. Hence find out them and add your blog citations into these directories.
      • Also, a citation strategy may not apply to all blog niches.

The strategies we discuss will give you enough opportunities to create valuable backlinks in the right places. The backlinks will help to boost up the ranking of your blog.

These tips will help you plan your SEO strategy better to get a better ranking in SERP. Let me know your feedback through comments if these strategies work for your blog.

Off-Page SEO Techniques for Better Ranking in 2018

Off-Page SEO Techniques for Better Ranking in 2018

Welcome to a new article on SEO techniques. In previous articles What is SEO and Importance of SEO in Digital Marketing, we talked about building the knowledge base for SEO, the importance of it and how we can benefit from it by following right SEO strategies.

In the next article On-Page SEO Techniques for Better ranking, we talked about some of the important On-Page SEO strategies that will help you improve the ranking of your website.

So, our next step is to understand Off-Page SEO techniques and the importance of it.

      So, what is Off-Page SEO?

Off-Page SEO refers to the techniques that you apply to other web pages and internet platforms to increase your site visibility in SERP.

Off-page SEO as the name implies is different from On-Page SEO, where On-Page SEO deals with implementing SEO strategies to your websites and web pages, whereas Off-SEO techniques involve creating website links and brand building techniques by using other site platforms.

Most of the people relate the off-page SEO strategies to the link building exercise but it is more than that. It deals with commenting, relationship building, influencing people, creating authorship and creating engagement on social media platforms.

Why Off-Page SEO is important for my site?

Before we set about, let's understand how Google or other search engines work. Search engines crawl through your web pages and rate your web pages, based on the on-page SEO factors applied to your web pages. The on-page SEO and off-page SEO together determines your web page ranking in the Google SERP.

Particularly, off-page SEO practices allow Google to understand how well your website content is liked by the visitors, shared on the social media and bookmarking services and linked to other sites.

In this matter, the website content and how neatly it is organized plays a vital role. Only quality content can help you get the quality backlinks, shares on the social media platforms and bookmarking on bookmarking sites.

The benefits of having off-page SEO are:

Increases Domain Authority (DA): It helps to increase the Domain Authority of your website. Domain Authority is the metric created by MOZ to rate your website on the scale of 1-100. Higher the DA score, higher will be your ranking in the search engine. So, if you have a better DA score than your competitor's website then you will get a better ranking in the Google SERP. For more details on Domain Authority, this article could be very helpful.

Increases Page Authority (PA): Page Authority is the metric created by Moz to rate an individual web page score. DA will tell you rating of the entire website whereas PA deals with rating a single web page of the website on the scale of 1-100 (100 being the best score). The off-page SEO practices can help you get the external links (links from other web pages to your web page) from high authority pages to outperform PA score of your web pages.

Increases ranking in Google: There are several factors that Google take into consideration for ranking your website. The PageRank(PR) is one the major factor that Google considers for displaying your website in top places. The off-page SEO techniques mentioned below will help you get better PR for your website and inside web pages and consequently better ranking in search engines.

Increases Brand Reputation: The off-page SEO techniques deals in developing and interacting with several marketers and webmasters and recognize how the world looks at your website. With the advancement of Google algorithms, several off-page SEO strategies which were followed in the past are no longer been used. Hence it leaves no option but to interact and create unique opportunities to build a brand reputation of your website through several methods.

Increases Traffic: Off-page SEO techniques increases your outreach to the end audience and hence increases the chances of getting more organic traffic, traffic from social media, bookmarking sites, web directories and referring sites. This enhances the chances of getting more visitors and creating several revenue channels through your website.

And, here are the Off-Page SEO techniques for better ranking:

      1. Search engine submission

      Search Engine Submission

There is no guarantee that within a particular amount of time your site will be indexed by search engines. In the ideal situation, it takes around 2-3 months for a particular site to get indexed by search engines. It may take even longer or a shorter period if your website is not optimized or well optimized for search engines.

Whatever time it may take, but to fasten up the process you may manually submit your website for indexing to the several search engines. GoogleYahoo (though Yahoo search is powered by Bing it operates on different algorithms to display websites) and Bing accept manual URL submissions at the specified links.

      Best SEO practices:

Below are the some important best practices to ensure your website gets indexed by Google (applies to Bing as well as Bing also follows the same methodology) as it is the most widely used search engine platform:
      • Manually submit the URLs of new or updated web pages to the search engines mentioned above.
      • Follow the instructions given by Google for webmasters in order to get your new or updated website indexed by search engine bots (also referred to as "Googlebots" or "spider") in lesser time.
      • Create a sitemap.xml file containing all URLs of your website to ensure your website is indexed and all your web pages are crawled. The sitemap.xml file helps Google and other search engines understand the structure of your website. Crawlers read this file and crawl through all URLs mentioned within this file.
      • Also, ensure you have written clear instructions on which pages you want to display in search engines and which one not by updating the robot.txt file.

      2. Video marketing

      Video Marketing

In 2017, video marketing has really taken a boost on the internet and it will continue to grow in the coming years. Many website owners nowadays tend to do video marketing and add videos to their posts explaining the inside content.

As per the article by Kelly Reeves, 87% percent of marketers create video content. Peter Schroeder in his articles says that mobile video is expected to increase 11x between 2016 and 2020.

Hence if you have a blog or website which is firmly established then video marketing should be your next move to take your blog to the next level. However new bloggers should make their choice wisely as video marketing require skills and dedication to survive in the marketing.

      Best SEO practices:
      • Create high-quality video content that solves user's queries or provides information to the users.
      • Create attractive snippets for the video that grabs visitor's attention.
      • Write a catchy and descriptive title that visitors can not go unnoticed.
      • Include important keywords in the title and place them at the beginning of the title.
      • Strive to keep the length of videos within 4-6 minutes, as such videos keep visitors engaged and reduces bounce rate.

      3. Image sharing

      Image Sharing

Image sharing has become one of the popular methods in recent time to drive visitors to your site and is a highly effective way of off-page SEO marketing.

People favor using new methods of SEO as technology is getting advanced. You can create several infographics, banners, graphics for your content and share them to get website traffic.

Images convey the key message very effectually than the text content and hence can help us to get visitors as well as backlinks to your site. Also, it requires fewer efforts and expertise to develop images to share them on several platforms.

One of the popular platforms with more than 200 million users for sharing infographics is Pinterest. Many websites which do not have image-driven content also incline to publish and promote their brand on Instagram and Tumblr like platforms.

There are various free image service providers (Pixabay, Pexels, Unsplash, etc.) and free tools (CanvapiZap, etc.) to create images for the platforms mentioned above.

Now when it comes to off-page SEO techniques for the images it can't be the same as on-page SEO techniques and so our alt text or filename is not going to help. Let's look into some of the best practices to follow for off-page image optimization.

      Best SEO practices:
      • Always use high-quality images for Pinterest pins. No buddy will like to see noisy, blur or small images in your pin.
      • Go for taller or vertical pins as these images will more likely get noticed by users than those small images.
      • Write a thoughtful and strong description for pinned images. This will help to display your images in search results when someone makes a search for it.
      • Research on keywords to be used for your pin by performing a search on Pinterest for similar image and write headlines accordingly.
      • Pin consistently to pull the attention of the rest of the users.
      • Add home-page or web page link in your image pin.
      • For Instagram images, add watermark or logo in your image. It will help you promote your brand.
      • Add your keywords to the image by using hashtags. There is no way to add a web page link. Even if you add it in comments, it wouldn't work as Instagram doesn't allow it.

      4. Link building strategies or backlinks creation

Link building strategies or backlinks creation

Link building is nothing but the creation of links on other sites that points a link to your site. These external links are called backlinks of your site and the process of creating backlinks is called link building.

Link building is one of the most important technique in off-page SEO strategies. But, getting backlinks from the low-quality site wouldn't take you anywhere. In fact, Google says in their article that in order to get a higher rank for the website, a webmaster should try to get links from the high-quality websites.

Hence, one quality link from a good quality site could be a lot better than 100 low-quality sites. When Google crawls your web pages, they keep a log of content being shared on the web page by indexing them. They analyze your keywords as well as the number of links from the external sites and authority of these external sites.

Best SEO practices for a link building:
      • While you promote your site on various platforms don't just share links of your site. Along with it indulge in engaging interaction with others, try and learn what they are doing for their site. Build a friendly relationship with other bloggers which will help you in your blogging experience.
      • Use important keywords for the anchor text of the incoming links.
      • Build the brand by sharing your site on the right platforms where visitors from your niche gathers and letting others know about your website.
      • Try to get backlinks from the trusted and high-authority websites from your niche.
      • .edu and .gov websites have high authority and hence try to get backlinks from these sites.

      5. Social media marketing

      Social Media Marketing

I have written a post on How to Get Traffic to Your New Blog, which covers social media strategy in great detail. Here we are going to have a look at it from the SEO perspective.

It has been often stated by Google authorities that Google doesn't consider your social media links as a direct ranking factor, but it helps determine the popularity of your blog by looking at the number of shares, likes, tweets, and retweets and if authoritative users are involved in these actions. So eventually looking at it, it seems that these actions influence your ranking in the SERP at the end.

      Best SEO practices:

      • Grow your reach by increasing followers on every social media platforms you use. Gather your niche audience under one platform by using social media platforms.
      • Engage in communication with other users on these platforms and share articles from your site with them. Encourage them to further share it on social media platforms and sites. More the shares, more it will reach the audience and increases the chances of having more backlinks. Quality content plays a very important role here.
      • Take polls and participate in a conversation with other users to increase engagement with other users.
      • Twitter and Google Plus shares can appear in SERP and can drive traffic to your blog through an indirect path.

      6. Social bookmarking

      Social bookmarking

Back in the time, people used to save the links of the important sites by bookmarking them in the web browser to read them later. But the risk here is whenever a computer crashes all these important bookmarks are gone.

After a time, social bookmarking sites came into existent where users can bookmark several site-URLs and save them under their profile. These bookmarks can be shared with other users and hence increases the chances of getting more exposure to your site.

      Best SEO practices:

      • Write catchy titles to grab the attention of the users and write a short but relevant description of your blog post.
      • Know the correct timings when users are active on these sites. Your post should grab the attention of the users in the first 24 hours of your adding the bookmark link. Hence, know the best timing for bookmarking and make proper scheduling accordingly to make the best out of it.
      • Engage and create a good rapport with the other users. So when you share your link on bookmarking site these users will support you by voting and may influence other users to vote for you.

The SEO techniques are mainly classified into two categories:

          • On-Page SEO Techniques and

In this article, I'm going to lay out some of the important on-page SEO techniques. But firstly, let's understand the meaning of the term On-page SEO before we jump into the actual conversation on the techniques.

The technique or term called as the on-page SEO because it deals with optimizing different parts of your website or a web page to get the better ranking in the SERP. Few expert bloggers may define On-Site SEO Strategy as different from On-Page SEO Strategy.

In reality, On-page SEO and on-site SEO are the same but two different terms derived to enlist a methodology applied to the entire site at once or to an individual web page.

Below are the factors that ensure your on-page SEO:

        1. Effective content writing

        Effective content writing

The most vital aspect of getting online success is "publishing quality content". I can not stop myself repeating the same phrase said over many online articles that "content is the king", and it is very much true. Content could be thought of as a foundation for all your SEO efforts. If you do not have quality content all other SEO strategies would fail.

I would request you to go through the article How to Write a Perfect Blog Post to understand all the factors that could create a post full of quality content.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • Post unique and quality content for readers.
        • Make it engaging so readers don't get bored reading it. Add facts, questions, story to make it interesting.
        • Use striking headlines in the blog post to drive users attention.
        • Organize content in a better way for a good reading experience. Use small paragraphs consisting of 4 or fewer lines, write appealing headings, subheading, use bullets wherever necessary, use bold, italics and colored words.
        • Include pictures in your blog post to enhance the reading experience.
        • Proofread your blog post before you make it live to avoid spelling and grammatical errors.

        2. HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) or HTTPS (Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

        Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol

In the year 2014 Google has officially announced that switching your website over to HTTPS version (which is more secure) will give a minor boost to your URL in the SERP. Well, Google is the king in the internet sphere and we must agree to its instruction if it benefiting us.

There is a reason for Google to prefer HTTPS over HTTP. HTTP or HTTPS for that matter is nothing but the mechanism used to transfer the information over the internet.

In technical term, HTTP is a "stateless" protocol meaning it doesn't remember or keeps the log of how information is passed from point (called as a node) A to point B. Rather HTTP prefers to focus on how information is presented to the user.

Whereas in the case of HTTPS which uses an extra layer called SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to transfer the data in a more secure way and avoid unauthorized access to the confidential information being sent.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • If you find this explanation as a brain exercise then simply remember that using HTTPS over the HTTP gives you a more secure environment for using the internet.
        • Plus, Google adds value to your blog by giving a boost in the SERP.

        3. Optimizing for mobiles

        Optimizing for mobiles

The count of mobile internet users is more than that of desktop internet users. As per studies, 52.21% of web traffic comes from mobile devices. Several studies say that there is an increase in the use of mobile internet and it will keep on growing in the coming time.

As a fact, mobile users might leave your site if it is not optimized for mobile devices. So important thing to note that we shouldn't lack behind in optimizing our website or blog for mobile users. Your website should function well on both desktop and mobile devices to offer the best services for both the users.

There are different techniques and mechanism for optimizing your web pages for mobile devices. Google has listed some of the methods for optimizing your website for search engine. However, Google recommends using responsive designs where URL and HTML of the page remain the same for all users irrespective of their devices and screen size.

        SEO Best Practices:

Avoid some of the common mistakes listed below to get better rank from Google.
        • Do not add any flash content as most of the mobile browser doesn't support flash and hence can not render them.
        • Configure viewport correctly as it helps browser scale your webpage depending on the mobile device screen.
        • Use a bigger font for the better mobile experience.
        • Sizing content is necessary to avoid scrolling of the web pages when you adapt to mobile view. Clickable or touchable elements shouldn't be placed too close to each other so clicking or touching on particular elements becomes difficult.
        • Pop-ups which difficult to close or dismiss may lower your search engine rank.

        4. Page speed matters

        Page speed matters

The technology is constantly taking a new leap and upgrading drastically. Things are getting fast and real time. Those days are gone when people used to wait for the site to load. In the current time if your site doesn't load in 3 seconds people will leave your site and look for another source as resources are not scarce. This behavior of the users increases the bounce rate of your web page which ultimately results in lowering the rank of your site.

Also from Google perspective, slower pages may cause Google crawlers not able to crawl through all web pages. As a result, not all web pages will be indexed by Google.

        SEO Best Practices:
So how do we ensure your web page loads quickly?
        • Use this tool from Google to track page speed and make necessary changes in your web page.
        • Optimize images, meaning you need to save the image for web preferences. Photoshop and various online tools help you do this. Do not upload high-resolution images as it is, instead compress them. High-resolution images have heavier file size and may take time to load.
        • Load background images through CSS
        • Remove unnecessary meta tags
        • Minimize unnecessary client-side scripts and javascript

        5. Easy site navigation

        Easy site navigation

When we talk about site navigation it does not involve only top menubar links or sidebar navigation links but it also involves links from the body of the blog post. Hence do not refrain yourself from adding links to the other posts from your blog. But while adding these links add them only to the meaningful places than overstuffing them all over.

Why it is necessary to add links? Because it helps Google understand the architecture of your blog. More the links Google is able to crawl through your pages, more pages will be indexed resulting in more visibility for your blog. Read this blog post to know How Internal Links can Boost your Ranking.

        SEO Best Practices:

Some of the tips for having good navigation architecture on your blog
        • Add navigation menu at the top of the web page which lists important web pages from your site. Avoid using nested or drop-down menus. If you fill an urge to use drop down menu implement them using HTML and CSS.
        • JavaScript-based menu fails to render on the browser on which JavaScript is disabled. Secondly, Google crawler would not be able to make through these JavaScript links.
        • Add links in the body of your blog post to other posts from your blog. Add to the only places where you feel it is important to do so.

        6. Writing a good page title

        Writing a good page title

The title tag of a web page gives a name to the web page and helps the search engine determine what is your web page about. It appears in the <title> tag.

A title is the first thing any user notices when he makes a query into the search engine. It becomes a deciding factor from user perspective whether to click on your link that appears in SERP listing. Hence it should be attractive enough to draw visitor's attention.

From the search engine perspective, the title of your web page is used as a heading in SERP. The more clicks you get from SERP, better will be your site rank. Secondly, the same title is used by social media platforms to generate a summary box when someone shares the link of your web page.

        SEO Best Practices:

Below are the tips for crafting a good title for your web page:
        • The title should be attractive enough to draw visitors attention and pursue visitors to click on the link in SERP.
        • The length of the title should not exceed 70 characters including the spaces. If it exceeds Google will truncate it to display the title in one line.
        • The important keywords of your post should be included at the beginning of the title as most of the users tend to pay attention to the initial words placed in the title. Also, it should be formed in such a way that it looks a naturally formed sentence or phrase.
        • Do not overstuff your title with the keywords and only include the most important keywords in your title. The overstuffed title may create a negative impression and may not rank well in SERP.

        7. Selecting highly-effective keywords

        Selecting highly-effective keywords

Keywords are the terms or phrases used by the users to find particular information or a web page by using search engines. It is very significant to plan correct keywords for your blog post in order to drive the correct audience to your blog and get better visibility in the search engines.

A free tool Google Keyword Planner helps you to target the correct keywords for your blog post.  Also, you could use the search related phrases that appear at the bottom of the Google page results.

An important point to note that as Google announces that they are no longer using a meta keyword tag from a long period to decide a ranking factor of a web page. Due to excessive use of the irrelevant keywords in a web page by users, Google discontinued referring to keywords mentioned in the meta keywords tag as the new policy tends to give more quality results in the SERP. Hence adding meta keywords is not going to make any difference.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • Use keyword planner tool to decide keywords to be used in a blog post
        • Use long tailed keywords to drive more traffic to your blog. The commonly used or shorter one has more competition and are not easy to get higher rank in SERP. Long-tailed keywords have less competition and are easy to target to search engines and users.
        • For better results place the keywords in the ideal places. The most important keywords should be placed in the title, URL of a web page, meta description tag and in the first paragraph of your blog post.
        • All secondary keywords can be distributed and placed in more natural formed sentences throughout the blog post.
        • Using keywords in the tag, bold words and alt text of the images also helps a web page optimized for search engines.
        • In order to stay in the competition, you will have to update the keywords on a periodical basis to meet the new requirements and changing trends.

        8. Writing functional meta description

        Writing functional meta description

The aim of the meta tag is to provide information about your web page to search engines. In this context meta description is the small paragraph written for the purpose to describe the inner content of your web page to the search engines and your potential visitors.

There is no limit on setting how your meta description should be long but generally, Google truncates the end part if it is exceeding 160 characters. Google does not use it for ranking your web page but a well-written description could help your web page get better Click Through Rate (CTR).

        SEO Best Practices:
        • Include important keywords in the meta description text. The search engines highlight these words by displaying them in bold text when someone makes a query into the search engine.
        • Meta description text should be simple to understand by all users yet compelling to drive users attention and make him click on your link.
        • It is a fact that search engines do not always use meta description text in SERP. Instead, they use the most relevant text from your web page for the query entered by the user. Hence you should always focus more on writing a qualitative blog post than meta description.
        • Each page on your site should have a unique meta description.

        9. H1 to H6 heading tags

        H1 to H6 heading tags

Heading tags are very useful to draw visitors attention to the important sections of your blog post. It also helps you organize the content in a more reader-friendly manner.

Form search engine perspective, Google crawl through your web page to understand important sections of your web page.

Do not get confused between header ( <head> ) tag and heading ( <h1> to <h6> ) tag. The header tag is used to define web page header and information of the web page. Whereas heading tags are used to define a section of the web pages and treated as heading to the various web page sections.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • H1 to H6 let you define heading for your web page. Though it is advisable not to use all of these heading tags to create a better impact on the users and search engines.
        • Use the H1 tag only for once throughout the web page. Use it so wisely that creates a good understanding of information inside it to the user and search engine. Generally, it is used to write the title of the blog post at the beginning of the blog post.
        • Use H2 for all other subsequent headings to structure the entire blog post.

        10. Optimizing images

        Optimizing images

Using images in a blog post is a good practice to enhance the appeal of the overall blog post. However, if these images are not optimized for search engines, you are losing a good chance of having visibility to more visitors.

The main difficulty arises when search engine bots are not able to understand the images as they cannot look through images as humans do. They need a text associated with images to understand the content of the images and how it is related to the rest of the content on a blog page.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • Give a readable file name to each image before you upload it for your blog post. Avoid using spaces in the file name as it renders "%20" character in URL of the image which makes it difficult to read. Also, do not use an underscore ( _ ) in the file name to separate two words as the whole string is considered as a single word which makes search engines difficult to understand it. Use a hyphen ( - ) to separate words in a filename which search engine can easily understand. "my-image-for-a-blog-post" is a good example of a filename optimized to meet search engine expectations.
        • Use .jpeg format if possible rather than using other formats as jpeg images come in lesser file size.
        • Do not include high-resolution images as it is. Instead, resize and compress them and use them in web preferences format.
        • Include alt text in images for search engines to understand the content of the images.
        • Optimized images have a better experience, faster load time and eventually reduces the bounce rate of the web page.

        11. Internal Links

        Internal links

The internal link is the link that redirects a user to a different web page of the same website. So basically it is the link of another web page from your website.

Having internal links in your blog post is essential because it helps a search engine understand the architecture or the structure of your website. Adding internal links to your blog post helps visitors stay on your website and increase user engagement.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • Add internal links at meaningful places in your blog post. It helps Google understand the structure of your website and have better visibility to other posts.
        • Internal links reduce bounce rate and increase your rank in search engines for particular keywords.
        • Internal links create a better user experience through important links placed inside the article.
        • Ensures to develop a page authority across the site for various blog posts.

        12. Anchor text

        Anchor text

Anchor text is nothing but the text on which hyperlink is applied. The anchor text sends a signal to search engines as some important keywords of the blog post and hence needs a little attention to as which text needs to be used as a hyperlink.

The links placed inside the article by using a proper anchor text helps search engines determine what is your web page about. While adding hyperlinks make sure to use keywords or descriptive text for the anchor text.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • Keywords used in anchor text helps the search engine determine what is your web page about. Hence use descriptive phrases for hyperlinking than more generic text like "click here".
        • Do not add links to websites which don't have a good reputation over the internet. Adding links to such site may have a negative impression on your website.

        13. Writing SEO friendly URL

        Writing SEO friendly URL

The purpose of having a URL address was to display a text that a human could read instead of displaying numbers (IP address). A URL doesn't drive your ranking immediately but influences the CTR.

Hence it is necessary to write a perfect URL for your blog. A URL slug (Slug is the descriptive text in the URL added after the domain name) should clearly state the what is your page about.

SEO Best Practices: Consider below tips for writing an SEO friendly URL.
        • An URL should consist of important keywords from your blog post. It should match the title text of your blog post. So it doesn't create confusion in the mind of visitors of being these two things different.
        • Keep the URL text simple, easily readable but compelling enough to draw visitors attention.
        • Keep them short as Google truncates the long URL.
        • Google completely ignores the stop words like(a, and, but, or, of, the, etc.) has no value in SEO, but adding them increases better readability. So adding them to very important places where it serves the purpose has no harm.
        • Do not include spaces or underscores to separate the words in URL. Google encourages to use hyphens instead of underscores.

Finally, if you optimize your web pages as per the described points, there is nothing which can stop you from getting better results from the search engines.

Any paid on-page SEO techniques or any plugin you use for the betterment of SEO will encourage you to use these tips to get better results from the search engines. Hence follow these tips wisely and ensure your blog is optimized in the best way for the search engine.

Mainly, this article will guide you on what is SEO, the importance of SEO in digital marketing, what are some benefits of SEO, and how one can do SEO for the site.

Let' unfold these questions one by one.

        So, what is SEO?

        What is SEO

We have heard the term SEO many times, which is often related to search engines, ranking, and web sites someway. Let's find out what does it mean.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization which simply means optimizing your website or blog for search engines. It involves a process of implementing techniques to increase a website's position on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP).

To increase ranking in search result pages, a blogger performs a certain set of actions that ensure a better ranking of his/her website. These actions are applied to various aspects and elements of the blog.

The SEO strategy applied to various factors like:

        • A title
        • Proper use of keywords,
        • Hyperlinks,
        • Meta description,
        • Backlinks

All of these factors put together and optimized in the best way ensures a better position in search results for your blog.

Why does my website need SEO?

Why does my website need SEO

But obvious, a question arises in one's mind, why there is a need for SEO if everything is in order on the website? A well written and presented content, a piece of detailed and qualitative information can still attract visitors, right?

Though our site has great content, if it is not optimized for search engines, it may lose the chance of getting exposure to the large audience who is constantly looking for the information. The importance of SEO comes directly therein.

If a search engine is unable to list our website or our website has a poor appearance in the search results, ultimately our content wouldn't reach to the large audience, as it may have been possible.

To include our website into search result pages, we will have to understand the working of various search engines in general.

Search engines operate on a preset algorithm (a set of rules to be followed in calculations) which keeps on changing from time to time and is hard to predict. These algorithms process a vast range of data and produce a refined search result when someone makes a query into a search engine.

At large, how these search engines or algorithms work internally is beyond the reach of a common user, is confidential, and a much-complicated process. However, some of the rules of these algorithms are widely known and followed by blog owners.

These rules are based on small actions that need to be completed during content creation process and some post the content creation. Once have completed these actions, it can help our site get listed with a better rank. Search Engine Optimization(SEO) techniques help you get this work done.

An optimized site can produce a better rank in the search result page and ultimately increases the chances of getting more visitors to our site.

        Benefits of SEO

        Benefits of SEO

Website Traffic: First and most important benefit of SEO is, it helps you gain organic traffic (site visits generated from search engines like Google). Organic traffic through search engines is still considered as the number one source of getting visitors to the website. It could send thousands of visitors to our site as compared to several other sources.

Have a look at the below chart displaying CTR (Click Through Rate - a number of clicks made on a site link from the Google or any search engine result page) of the year 2017.

        CTR by positions 2017

Now, if we closely look, the only first ranking website gets a maximum number of visits. As we move on to further ranks, this number goes on decreasing.

For a better understanding of how important it is to rank in a higher position, let's consider an example. Let's assume that around 50,000 users from across the world make a query into the search engine "what is SEO". As per the above chart, the 1st ranking site will get 10,560 visitors, the 2nd ranking website gets 5,325 visitors, and the site on the 3rd rank will get 3785 visitors. Now, see the major differences in the count of visits a particular site gets depending on its position in search ranking.

Brand awareness: SEO could help you to reach more audience. Google displays sites in the top-positions that have done a better SEO and people trust Google for doing it so. Hence, the top positions in the search result page have a good impression and get more clicks. Resultantly, the top websites get more exposure and recognition. Ultimately, it helps to make your brand known to the larger audience.

Return on investment: As SEO drives more traffic to your website, you will gradually start building a fan base. People start to trust our brand, which increases the direct and indirect sale of the services. Thus, involves a greater possibility of converting a prospect to a customer, which would help us make income online.

Also looking it through a different perspective, SEO drives traffic to our site absolutely for free and hence it saves your money from wasting it on paid mediums to drive traffic. This provides an opportunity to invest this money elsewhere to achieve larger goals.

Take your website to the next level: A better-planned SEO strategy will always drive a good amount of regular and sustained traffic to your website. This traffic could open new doors for our online business to grow. One may upgrade his/her website to accommodate the requirement of the growing traffic and also can plan to set a foot in a new market and economies for even greater opportunities.

New customers encourage growth: SEO drives targeted traffic to our website and translates them into customers. We get better conversion rates, increased brand awareness, eliminates the cost involved in traffic through paid channels, and increases the chances of breaking into new markets. This is all put together assists us to grow.

        So, how does SEO work?

        How does SEO work

Knowing the inner working of the search engines is a really tough task and it is something that search engine companies do not wish to share with the general audience.

It is fair enough not to disclose this information or else anyone with information will rank top in result listing and there wouldn't be any quality and relative content in the search results. People wouldn't trust a search engine for a reliable source of information. This would encourage people to make their website search engine focused rather than focusing on content.

Having said that holding the top position in SERP isn't a complete mystery.

So, how one could get on the top place in the SERP? There are two approaches to do SEO for the website. One is called white hat technique which involves legitimate methods one can apply to their web pages and sites to rank top in SERP.

Whilst another method involves tricks to cheat search engines and get a better position in SERP. The second method is called a black hat technique and it isn't the right way to get in top position. This method violates the search engine rules and if caught you may get penalized for your actions or search engines may completely ban your content from appearing into SERP.

The below-listed methods are legitimate ways to do SEO for a blog. These methods help our page to get the best-deserved position in the search engines:

        • An attractive title
        • Proper use of keywords,
        • Descriptive hyperlinks,
        • Meta description,
        • Relative and quality backlinks

Search engines gather information about your web page and the content inside it through computer programs called spiders and crawlers. Spiders and crawlers read and analyze our web pages for the content we have provided. Once analyzed they assign a rank to your web page (the process is called indexing) based on the above-listed factors and our web page appears in the SERP.
